Releasing Turtles at Patuno Resort Wakatobi

23 December 2010

Patuno Resort Wakatobi worked in partnership with the local community and local govenment to release 10 turtles back to the sea from the beach at Patuno Resort Wakatobi.

Local Wakatobi Government officials take part in re-releasing turtles back to the wild at Patuno Resort Wakatobi Patuno Resort Wakatobi - Turtle re-release event. Local government officials take part and help raise awareness regarding turtle conservation issues in the Wakatobi

These 10 turtles were captured by members of the local bajo community and kept in their village. Their 'owners' kept them in small pools enclosed by nets, or tied a leash around their legs to stop them from escaping. They would have eventually been sold to be eaten. It is illegal to capture and trade turtles in this way. The local National Park Rangers, supported by WWF and TNC did a raid on the village and rescued these 10 lucky turtles. Those who had captured the turtles were given a warning but no fine. If they are caught again for the same offence they will be fined by the National Park Rangers.

Influential members of the local government including the Bupati of the Wakatobi, Ir Hugua, and the Vice Govenor for the Southeast Sulawesi Province were present and took part in the re-relase of these turtles. At Patuno Resort Wakatobi we are very hopefull for the future and see this as a positive move. We hope that the local Wakatobi govenrnment will continue to take positive steps for conservation in the Wakatobi.
